In October of 2015, while spending a day with Mark Ryan at the L.A. Poche Perique Company in St. James Parish, Louisiana. our own Russ Ouellette asked Mark if he had ever thought of trying to process Virginia in the same method as perique. Mark said that he had thought of it, but was told it wouldnt work. After a bit of conversation, Mark decided to bring down some bright, sweet, yellow, Canadian-grown Virginia to give it a try. The processing time had to be much shorter due to the aggressive fermentation due to the high sugar content, but the result, called Acadian Gold, has more depth than normal Virginia with a malty note unlike anything else.

A & C Petersen has recently been sold to Orlik A/S, of Assens, Denmark, which promptly discontinued the manufacture of Bengal Slices. A replacement, under the James B Russell aegis, has been released, approximating the A&C Petersen blend.

John Cottons Double Pressed Kentucky brings a new approach to pressed tobaccos thats almost revolutionary. It starts with smoky dark-fired Kentucky blended with sweet Virginias. 1 Hearth & Home Magnum Opus Click for details During the seventies, our master blender, Russ Ouellette created his first tobacco blend,using a well-known mixture and then tweaking it. Russ loved Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture, and he especially enjoyed the very special Oriental tobacco that made it so unique - Yenidje. So he added even more of the Queen of Tobaccos to B.S.O.S.M., and then added some Perique to give it more body, spice and a bit of sweetness. When Sobranie disappeared, Russ couldnt make his blend anymore. Fast forward to 2010. Hearth & Home has been on the market for five years at that point, and Russ thought about his old favorite and decided to set out to recreate it. After a little experimentation, he was pleased with the results, and had intended just to make it for himself. When he lit up a bowl at a pipe club meeting, the members commented on the great aroma and asked if they could try it. They universally fell in love with the blend, and told Russ that he had to sell it. One of the members told Russ that this blend was his Magnum Opus and the name stuck. They always took care to have a pocket sized block of sweet Virginia tobacco with them, which they would take a slice off to then rub out and smoke in their cutty pipes. In heavy weather, they would opt to just bite off a corner to enjoy as a stimulating piece of chewing tobacco. Selected sweet Virginias with a small pinch of perique, classically enhanced with Caribbean rum, are matured over a long time in the press. The result is a dark brown, full and pleasant pipe tobacco in traditional style offering you a comfortably cool and smooth smoking experience. Unlike ordinary flakes, it was not cut into slices, but packaged as a solid piece of real plug tobacco. Enjoy it in pipes with smaller bowls.
