1 GQ Tobaccos Askwith Kake Click for details Since we started trading we have had a very large interest in our hand blended tobaccos and not only with smokers, also pipe makers. We work closely with many pipe makers around the world and thanks to the decline of boutique blenders, most of these are still looking for their perfect tobacco (like most of us!). Chris was the first independent pipe maker we started working with and was the obvious candidate for a custom blend. After a lot of conversations, Glynn and Chris decided to create a Big Boys VaPer. Most VaPer (Virginia & Perique) tobaccos are made using sweet, grassy (flue cured) Virginias and sprinkling of Perique. The resulting tobacco has a lovely grassy flavour with a touch of an acidic twang from the Perique. These blends tend to use about 5% of Perique and this is considered the magic amount! For our Askiwth Kake we opted to use a few different Virginias, Flue Cured and less sweet Steamed Virginia for the base. The use of the steamed Virginia takes some of the heat out of the tobacco and creates a smoother smoking experience. Then comes the part which Glynn usually goes over the top with, Perique. As we said earlier most use 5%, we however like to push this Condiment leaf as far as we can, so 20% can be found in this blend. The use of so much Perique really gives this blend a punchy spicy flavour, which is not a hint as found in other VaPers, rather more a main player in the flavour-scape. With such contrasting variety in the tobaccos, we opted to press this tobacco into a Kake (Crumble Cake). 1 GQ Tobaccos Classic Balkan (Izmir) Click for details A Balkan blend is often comprised of Virginia, Orientals and Latakia, with the Oriental being the main component in the flavour profile. Our Izmir Classic is just that, a complex and honest Balkan blend using Turkish Izmir tobacco. The tobacco’s origin began with our Breakfast Blend by means of the addition of a few differing Virginias and of course, Latakia. This tobacco was first blended in 2010 after a request from a member of the Nottingham Pipe Club and it now has a few “to die for” fans. The addition of sweet, grassy, lemony Virginias from the New World gives a light and refreshing edge to the blend. Fire-cured Virginias and Burley (Kentucky), even in the amounts used on this blend keep the smoke leathery and earthy. While the combination of Latakia and Izmir adds a wonderful creamy smoky core that runs all the way through the tobacco. Even with this wide selection of tobaccos, we have carefully blended them to create a symphony of flavours that will appeal to most Oriental smokers. 1 Russ Ouellette Classic Burley Kake Click for details Classic Burley Kake is a new blend that pays homage to old-time Burley flakes and cakes. Using Tennessee and Kentucky Burleys, ranging from lighter white to darker mahogany, and a bit of matured red Virginia, this sliced cake tobacco is a traditional American-style blend. We start with four different types of Burley, the aforementioned Tennessee and Kentucky, plus two different premium white Burleys. Then we add a red Virginia for a maple-like sweetness. Then we use all-natural flavors- cocoa, rum and anise and steam the tobaccos with the flavorings and firmly press and slice it. The aroma is mellow and pleasant, and the taste is lightly sweet with a large volume of smoke. 1 GQ Tobaccos Classic English Click for details Our Classic English blend has a special place in the heart of our Master Blender, Glynn, and which is very closely related to his first ever tobacco mélange, which we call Nottingham Blend, a tobacco which has fans around the world and gave Glynn his first hands-on experience of making a tobacco. This differs slightly from the original, with brown instead of Black Cavendish and higher proportion of cigar leaf; beginning with a steady and deep foundation of Rich Kentucky and stoved Virginias, a few brighter flue-cured Virginias are added for that little extra sweetness and to help keep the tobacco burning. The use of Brown Cavendish adds a creamy, almost woody, over tone to these complex flavours. The blend is finally finished off with a good handful of Latakia for that distinct English taste and aroma. To finish, after the tobaccos have been allowed to settle and marry up, a small amount of cigar filler and binder tobaccos are added for an extra hint of spice.
