When Gallaher took over the Sobranie mixtures from the Redman family the original blenders finding the composition too complex and costly, they simplified it. After Gallaher stopped making the simplified Bengal Slices, Mssrs James B Russell, Inc., arranged for a composition similar to the Gallaher revision to be made exclusively for them by A & C Petersen, Horsens, Denmark. A & C Petersen has recently been sold to Orlik A/S, of Assens, Denmark, which promptly discontinued the manufacture of Bengal Slices. A replacement, under the James B Russell aegis, has been released, approximating the A&C Petersen blend.

Wilke Rum and Maple The flue cured Virginia provides grass, a little hay, and lightly tart and tangy citrusy with a touch of tangy dark fruit. It’s the lead component. The nutty, woody, earthy, toasty burley is a secondary player. The sugary black cavendish adds a little sweetness. In every rum and maple blend I have ever smoked, the rum is the dominant topping. Not so here, where the maple takes a little of the lead. The interplay of toppings sublimate the tobaccos without totally drowning them out. The strength is a step short of the center of mild to medium. The taste is a slot past that center. The nic-hit is mild. There’s no chance of bite or harshness. No rough spots either. Burns cool, clean and smooth with a fairly consistently deep sweetness from first puff to last. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and requires an average number of relights. The short lived after taste and room notes are very pleasant. The room smell certainly passes the wife test. An easy going all day, comfortable smoke.

WILKE No. 191 A tobacco for all seasons, the right aroma and the right taste make this my number one selling tobacco! The natural flavors of vanilla beans and Vermont honey are combined with Virginias, matured Kentucky Burley and a combination of 3 toasted Black Cavendishes to create this most popular mild slow burning blend. The Virginia is a minor component, and save for a light grassiness, is easy to miss. The same can be almost be said for one of the black cavendish, which mostly seems to acts to offer a little sugary smoothness. The other black cavendish seems to have been topped with some honey and vanilla bean. The Kentucky burley is slightly woody, lightly nutty and floral. Has a low nicotine level. May need some dry time, and will require a few relights. Burns fairly cool, but should be sipped and not puffed fast. The flavors meld well together in the proportions they were designed, and never weaken. Burns to ash and has a very pleasant after taste and room note. An all day smoke if you wish it to be.

When Father Dempsey was assigned to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, right behind our shop, he would always come in for a visit. The Father was used to buying his tobacco at Dunhill, but told my father hed rather buy from his shop, if he could create a comparable blend. They spread out his blend on the tobacco bar and my father studied it. He was able to identify the different tobaccos, but not the proportions. So they kept trying different formulas until finally Father Dempsey said, Stop right there! This is better than my old blend ever was. And soon so many of the Fathers friends and parishioners were coming in asking for Father Dempseys tobacco that it came to be called just that. My father would say it has the aroma of a campfire burning--a smooth and full-bodied Latakia based blend. Among those in our rolodex who chose Father Dempseys blend were Cecil B.
