A Kearvaig Pipe Club Tobacco. Notes: By K&K: Bob Gregory doesnt know how many Bothies (small huts) there are in the Highlands, but he estimates about 40 of em. The good thing about these cabins is that they are allowed to smoke here. You can do everything in such a hut: You can make a fire to keep yourself warm, eart the leftover food, and drink the leftover drink. The prerequisite, however, is that food an drink be stocked up again for the next hiker. These little huts have saved my life once says Bob. Many years ago, with m father I spent two nights in the Cairngorm Mountains in the wet, cold and windsy weather. My father had sprained his foot and could barely walk. Our luck was the Corar Bothy who gave us shelter during the storm. The Bothy Flake is a thanksgiving to these small huts. Consisting of a full Virginia tobacco with a small share of latakia from Cyprus. The flake gets its smoky-peaty undertone with the addition of a typical Highland malt whiskey essence, which is highlighted by the latakia. Medium in strength and aromatic with a full-bodied room note. A genuine Highlander!

Through the stoving process, this select flue-cured leaf maintains its naturally bright, citrusy, and zesty character in the high tones while projecting a deeper, baritone foundation that pairs exceptionally well with its generous measure of genuine St. James Perique— grown, harvested, processed, and barrel-aged on a single farm in the heart of St. James Parish, Louisiana. Carolina Red Flake with Perique offers numerous flavors and aromas, balancing pepper and piquancy with undertones of port wine and stone fruits alongside brighter citrusy highlights. Russ took the Virginias used in his best known Virginia based blend, Anniversary Kake, and amped up the perique content, then added a splash of some very nice dark-fired Kentucky leaf. Fire Storm is rather sweet, but the spice shows up shortly thereafter and builds gradually through the end, with a peppery finish. For smokers who like bold Virginia/perique blends. Notes: From Pipes&Cigars website, written by Russ: I’ve been blending pipe tobacco for nearly forty years, but ten years ago is when things really took off. I had made some blends for our brick & mortar store that did well, so we put them up for sale on P&C, and that was the beginning of Hearth & Home. The Nicotiana Rustica is the sister of the tobacco plant that we know and love (Nicotiana Tabacum). Native to the Amazon region and other parts of South America, the plant and the various types of use spread throughout the American continent. The English settlers found the rustica tobacco in North America in 1607 and saw how the native Indians smoked the tobacco in clay pipes. Since the nicotine content of the rustic plant is unusually high, however, it quickly went out of fashion when the Virginia and burley tobaccos known today were discovered and spread. Today, tobacco on a rustic basis can only be found in Eastern Europe, in the countries of the Middle East and in Asia. A new process was developed to make this very potent tobacco edible for the German palate. The tobacco leaves are sun dried and thus retain their natural sugar. Dark Virginia and Burley were also added to balance the flake. Like all flakes of the HH series, the Rustica was also hot pressed, which allows the tobacco flavors to combine optimally and to mature through a light fermentation. Despite all these measures, the HH Rustica still has a very high nicotine content, it is by far the strongest tobacco in the Mac Baren range and is probably one of the strongest pipe tobacco worldwide. We recommend that you eat well and use a small pipe before enjoying this flake, but dont be put off; the Mac Baren HH Rustica is probably the most extraordinary tobacco of recent years and an absolute pleasure experience.

Among the most elusive of Mac Barens spun-cut mixtures is Royal Twist, a distinctive Virginia/Perique blend enhanced by Dark-Fired Kentucky. Despite strong popularity and demand, it was delisted in the 1960s due to shared name registrations and unfortunately was taken off the market. While it later returned as Mac Barens flagship Roll Cake, one of the blending houses most popular tobaccos of all time, the recipe had changed and no longer included Perique. Select Virginias, Dark-Fired Kentucky, and Perique form the core of this complex mixture, elevated by a naturally sweet, whole-leaf Virginia wrapper for a nuanced, all-day smoking experience with just the right amount of peppery, smoky spice. Legend has it that Aleister Crowley, famed adept of the Order of the Golden Dawn and founder of the Ordo Templi Orientis, is purported to have made a habit of smoking rum-soaked perique as a meditative aid. To date, many a dabbler has pursued his own manifestation of this concoction out of sheer curiosity. We have too. And so in the spirit of the nefarious occultist himself, we sought to tame the Beast with our own rendering of the recipe, soaked for seven days in spiced rum, so that we might share our vision of it with the most inquisitive and brave of pipe smokers. Notes: From Cornell & Diehl website: The Beast features 51% Perique, soaked in spiced rum for seven days and supported by C&Ds proprietary Red Virginia Cavendish, unsweetened Black Cavendish, and a whisper of Dark-Fired Kentucky. It contains the oldest Red Virginia grades available, comfy Brights, and snappy Stoved Virginia as well as Perique from two different Vintages. SantaDrive replaces the Brights and part of the Stoved Virginia from the Original Recipe with the same Virginias used in KBV Van Gogh. Due to the Perique shortages, we decided to reserve our Periques for Limited mixtures only. Only 50 pounds of SantaDrive was produced. The folks behind the brand were told about the availability of a fresh, empty bourbon barrel from one of the best-known single-barrel brands on the market, Blantons. They selected a special tobacco blend with a more modest amount of Latakia, so the infusion of bourbon flavor would be clearly noticeable. The tobacco was laid to rest in the barrel for a full month to allow the infusion of buttery-smooth bourbon flavor to take hold. Then the tobacco was pressed into a crumble cake to further embed the flavor into the leaf. Since the barrel can only be used once since the essence of the premium bourbon evaporates fairly quickly, they were limited to a relatively small number of tins that could be produced. 1 Sutliffe Tobacco Company Hearth & Home - Black House 10th Anniversary Click for details In 2011, the Seattle and New York Pipe Clubs acquired a large tin of Balkan Sobranie 759 that was around 23 years-old and tried to figure out what to do with it. They decided to send samples to three blenders - Carl McAllister of Sutliff, Mike McNiel of McClelland, and Russ Ouellette of Hearth & Home - and asked them to try to replicate the blend for a contest at the 2011 Chicagoland Pipe and Tobacciana Show. The challenge was modifying the blend to accommodate 23 years of aging. When the contest, called the Balkan Sobranie 759 Throwdown, was completed, Russ entry, now known as Hearth & Home Marquee BlackHouse, was the winner. To celebrate a decade of this now classic blend, Russ wanted to do something special. When he learned about a small cache of well-aged Orientals the answer was simple - substitute the Orientals from the original with this vintage leaf. 1 MacBaren HH Rustica Flake Click for details The Nicotiana Rustica is the sister of the tobacco plant that we know and love (Nicotiana Tabacum). Native to the Amazon region and other parts of South America, the plant and the various types of use spread throughout the American continent. The English settlers found the rustica tobacco in North America in 1607 and saw how the native Indians smoked the tobacco in clay pipes. Since the nicotine content of the rustic plant is unusually high, however, it quickly went out of fashion when the Virginia and burley tobaccos known today were discovered and spread. Today, tobacco on a rustic basis can only be found in Eastern Europe, in the countries of the Middle East and in Asia. A new process was developed to make this very potent tobacco edible for the German palate. The tobacco leaves are sun dried and thus retain their natural sugar. Dark Virginia and Burley were also added to balance the flake. Like all flakes of the HH series, the Rustica was also hot pressed, which allows the tobacco flavors to combine optimally and to mature through a light fermentation. Despite all these measures, the HH Rustica still has a very high nicotine content, it is by far the strongest tobacco in the Mac Baren range and is probably one of the strongest pipe tobacco worldwide. We recommend that you eat well and use a small pipe before enjoying this flake, but dont be put off; the Mac Baren HH Rustica is probably the most extraordinary tobacco of recent years and an absolute pleasure experience.
