Long cut Virginia & Latakia pressed into perfection. Bengal Slices was, originally, the flake version of Balkan Sobranie. When Gallaher took over the Sobranie mixtures from the Redman family the original blenders finding the composition too complex and costly, they simplified it. After Gallaher stopped making the simplified Bengal Slices, Mssrs James B Russell, Inc., arranged for a composition similar to the Gallaher revision to be made exclusively for them by A & C Petersen, Horsens, Denmark. A & C Petersen has recently been sold to Orlik A/S, of Assens, Denmark, which promptly discontinued the manufacture of Bengal Slices. A replacement, under the James B Russell aegis, has been released, approximating the A&C Petersen blend.

A pipe tobacco developed by the inimitable Joe Lankford of the Seattle Pipe Club, Mississippi River Rum Barrel Aged is a version of SPCs popular Mississippi River blend. Its an English mixture of Latakia, Virginias, Perique, and Oriental tobaccos, but in this Rum Barrel Aged version, its blended and then packed into oak rum barrels to age and for the tobacco to acquire the nuanced flavor of oak and rum — flavors well known and appreciated by pipesmokers. Its then pressed into cakes to help marry the flavors, contributing to the character of the fine English blend, before being cut into a crumble cake and packaged into two-ounce tins for flavorful convenience, each tin included with an rum barrel stave to preserve the flavors.

Cornell & Diehl Small Batch Carolina Red Flake with Perique 2021 follows the same formula as the previous version but with some twists. The Virginias come from the Old Belt region of the Carolinas, but theyve selected the top leaves, called tips, to provide the highest sugar content, but being red and orange, they deliver more of a bread and pastry type note instead of the typical hay and grass flavors. Adding true St. James Perique to the Virginias and pressing it into a flake means that there are both bright sweet notes along with the more dried fruit taste of Perique. A quality English blend from renowned G.L. Pease, Spark Plugs tin art immediately denotes its inspiration: A Union Jack comprises the foreground in recognition of the English blends that dominated British pipesmoking preferences in the early 20th century. These original mixtures offered a distinctly spicy and smoky component though the use of Latakia and Oriental tobaccos overtop a Virginia base. As such, Spark Plug is an immediately Latakia-forward blend that Pease describes as Rich, dark, oily, mysterious, full of fascinatingly complex, smoky, and leathery aromas, just like all those little British cars from my past that inspired both the blend and the name.
